The art of breeding roses
For hundreds of years rose breeders have poured their heart into the search for the perfect rose. Even the most ardent breeders will admit - no known rose is perfect; none encompass all the qualities we desire.
It takes years of patience to create a commercially viable rose variety.
Of the thousands of commercially available roses they all trace their heritage back to a few rose species that grew in the wild. It has been the work of the breeders to cross pollinate these shrubs into new varieties. This process is called hybridisation, and it consists of pollinating the ovaries of one variety with the pollen from another. As simple as this may sound, it takes years of patience to create a commercially viable rose variety. Some of the more aggressive rose breeders cross pollinate up to a quarter million new varieties per year. This process usually takes anywhere from 5 to 10 years and only one or two varieties will have the necessary characteristics to be produced commercially.
